Thank You from all at April Lodge

25.03.10 - Thanks to everyone who has shows concern and helped with our new influx of 43 guinea pigs, especially our fostercarers who are now looking after around 30 guinea pigs.  This has enabled us to free up spaces for the new additions.

23.12.09 Thanks to Melanie Jater who sent a package of guinea pig treats for Christmas

08.12.09 We would like to reply personally to Kaz Ward for her kind cheque donation of £25 but there was no contact address.  Here’s what Kaz had to say :-

Hello Val, I've been looking at your website for a while and I do hope that the enclosed will be of some help to you.  It’s nice to know that I’m not alone in my love for these delightful, intelligent, loving little creatures.

 Thank you for caring,

Kindest regards,

Kaz

THANKS KAZ!  Your comments and kind donation mean a lot to us!

07.01.10  Vivien, Jade, Sky and Saucy

Don’t know if you remember us, we are the Dew family and we had four guinea pigs from you. They were Vivien, Jade, Sky and Saucy. Unfortunately we lost Jade today and felt it only right you should be the first to know.  She was fine, then yesterday she stopped eating and was very non-plus today.  I gave her some pureed banana and water through a syringe but she didn’t pick up.  I gave her a bath and a blow dry as she always loved this which now I am so pleased I did.  She was snuggled in a blanket and was cuddled until the end, it was all very peaceful and the way I like my animals to go instead of having to make the decision at the vets.  Vivien doesn’t seem bothered, she has eaten well today even though Jade hasn’t been in the cage and was happily running in the indoor run we bought them with the other two.  We will miss her terribly as she liked sitting and watching telly on our laps but we feel we gave her a good life and she died from natural causes at home very peacefully.

We had a scare with Vivien back in the summer.  We put them in the run in the morning, all was fine although I noticed she had a bit of an upset tummy.  Unfortunately it was a hot day and she got what I now know as Fly Strike.  I had never heard of this.  When I went to put them in their hutches and feed them Vivien seemed to have trouble walking.  I picked her up and noticed what I thought were worms on her bottom.  I phoned our vet and they told me to take her up straight away.  He diagnosed Fly Strike and explained what it was, I felt awful but he said it can happen in 6 hours, it was probably the combination of a hot day and an upset tummy.  I left her there and they gave her some medicine, I was not prepared for what I returned to.  The maggots were all over her coat, the vet explained the medicine flushes them out.  He told me Vivien was seriously ill and probably wouldn’t make it through the night.  I waited while they bathed her and gave me all the tablets she needed.  The nurse said hope to see you Monday but we probably won’t.  I was determined so I stayed up all night cuddling her, getting rid of the odd maggot that was still appearing.  She started eating and responded well to the medicine.  I gave her a bowl of her favourite veg which she ate.  She made it to Monday morning and everyone in the vets was amazed considering how poorly she had been.  She became quite a celebrity at the vets as she had to go back quite a few times for check ups.  She lost a lot of her coat because of the harshness of the medication but 6 months later she is running faster than all the others and eats like a horse, her coat is back to normal.

Whenever I hear anyone is getting or has got a guinea pig I tell them to check the piggies bottoms each day and make sure they are clean.  Ours live indoors now and go outside (weather permitting) in the day.

Providing Vivien is happy we will not get another mate for her as she is quite old now and can be quite grumpy.  She will go in the pen with Sky and Saucy in the day so will still have company.

Sky and Saucy are doing brilliantly.  Sky (who used to bite sometimes) is a lovely friendly guinea pig.  As soon as they hear the knife chopping veg they are standing on their hind legs waiting for tea.  They are great with the children and love lots of cuddles.

Happy New Year to you all.

Some Piggy Photo's I want to share with you

First of all I want to say how much I enjoyed your web site. I took in two rescue pigs just over a year ago (Pauline knows the story!) scraggy girls (pictured with my two "fatties"), who fattened up nicely. They were to be company for my two girls (both Ginger, the smooth one getting on a bit &  Abby just in her prime), who had lost their older companion. I thought the new girls were getting a bit fat & had my suspicions only to be proved correct last November, 14th & then 21st!! 4 then 3 were born. The mums had held back until they were happy & well fed. The 4 boys (pictured together looking out of their box were found a very good home. They were taken to a Rodentologists every 3 months for nails & grooming etc as long haired. I kept the three girls, 2 smooth & one crested Peruvian a beautiful black & white (pictured). The mothers now have beautiful hair & have to have their hair bobbed regularly, as does the other daughter. My smooth ginger girl is so happy with so many companions, fingers crossed she will make 6 or 7.

I loved reading of your successes, it is so rewarding seeing these adorable animals thriving. My rescue contact up here in Surrey is Poo Pigletts & like you doing a worth while job. Keep up the good work & keep fighting the piggies corner. Regards Susan (B-K)

Lily's Story

My guinea pig is called Lily.  I got her from April Lodge with her companion Jeremy 3 years ago.  Sadly Jeremy died this year, because Lily was so sad we got her another guinea pig friend from April Lodge called Dazzle.  They get on really well and I love Dazzle even though I still miss Jeremy.  My Mum says I look after my guinea pigs very well and I make sure I treat them as I would like to be treated.  Both Lily and Dazzle were badly treated before they went to April Lodge.

Anyway early in September I took Lily and Dazzle to Canterbury Pets at Home Guinea Pig show and guess what ? Lily won best in show !  Not bad for a rescue guinea pig who is nearly 5.  Hope you like the picture of us winning.

Poorly Piggies from Gracie

I have just visited your website and read the news page. As usual the pictures of the poorly piggies have really pulled on my heart strings.
My eldest guinea pig (Douglas) was rescued with a similar skin condition, fortunately not so severely. He has now been with me nearly 3 years (his approximate age is thought to be 5 years). Although, he has had to fight a few health problems due to his poor start, he seems to be very happy.  I want to wish all 14 a happy recovery. I would also like to ask if there is anything that I could provide help for to aid their recovery?  Keep up the great work. And still love your website.

OUR HOLIDAY ( A story for the little ones) by Jasmine & Sophie Hoult

12th September 2008 we set off on our boating holiday with our Mummy & Daddy, arriving in the rain at Rugby to board a narrow boat named Meybe.  It was quite snug inside and we cuddled up ready to watch the television, whilst our Daddy was outside at the back of the boat in the rain.  When the sun came out we were put on deck in our carrier and received a lot of attention from passers by perhaps that is because we are such pretty girls.  We quite enjoyed our holiday, but did miss our garden and grass, although we had Readigrass on board to make up for it.  The weather was still nice when we came home so out in our garden we went with fond memories of our holiday.  Where to next year ?
